Currency Museum

For those who like to look at money, you can see lots more of it at the Currency Museum (9613-782-8914) in the Bank of Canada to 245 Sparks St. in summer, its open Monday to Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. From September to May, it’s closed Monday. Various displays tell the story of money through the ages, fro whale’s teeth to collector’s banknotes. Admission is free.

Notre Dame Basilica built in 1839, this is one of the city’s most impressive house of worship. A pamphlet available at the door outlines the many features, including carvings, windows, the organ and the Gothic-style ceiling. It’s on Guigues Ave, across from the National Gallery, in the Byward Market area.

Next door to the War Museum is the mint at 320 Sussex Drive. No longer producing day-to-day coinage, it strikes special-edition coins, commemorative pieces, bullion investment coins and the like. Founded in 1908 and renovated in the mid-1980s, this imposing stone building has always been Canada’s major refiner of gold. Tours are given by appointment; call to arrange one and see the process- from sheets of metal to bags of coins. It’s open day to Friday. Admission is $2, family $8. Sorry, no free samples.

This museum at 330 Sussex Drive, with Canada’s largest war-related collection, contains all manner of things military and traces Canadian military history. The life-sized replica of a WWI trench is good. You’ll also see largest displays, with sound and the museam also contains the country’s largest collection of war art. A major expansion and upgrading currently is underway. A new facility is planned for 2003 near the Aviation Museum.

The musium is open from 9.30 am to 5 pm daily (until 8 pm on Thursday) in summer, and from Tuesday to Sunday in winter. Admission is $3.50 for adults, $8 for families and free for veterans. It’s free for everyone on Sunday morning. 

Enthusiasts should ask about Vimy House, a warehorse for heavy artillery, which is open in summer. It’s west along Wellington St at 221 Champagne Ave N (about 12 minutes by car).

Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (CMCP)

Wedged in between the Chateau Laurier and the canal, in a reconstructed railway tunnel at 1 Rideau Canal, the CMCP is the photo museum. Originally part of the National Film Board, this is where the still photography division houses its photographic research departments and the country’s vast photographic archives.

Unfortunately, gallery space is limited, so you may want to check what’s on before visiting. Exhibits are not always of Canadian’s work and may not be of very much interest to the casual viewer unacquainted with esoteric approaches to the photography medium. Shows change quarterly.

CMCP

The gallery is open from May to October from 11 am to 5 pm daily (until 8 pm on Thursday), except Wednesday, when year it keeps the same hours Wednesday to Sunday but is closed Monday and Tuesday Admission is free. Enjoy the tourist spot beauty.

About Bytown Museum & Ottawa Locks

Focusing on city history, Bytown Museum is in the oldest stone building Ottawa, it’s east of parliament Hill, beside the canal- go down the stairs from Wellington St and back to the locks at the river. Used during construction of the canal for storing military equipment and money, it now contains artifacts and documents pertaining to local history.

On the ground floor, Parks Canada runs an exhibit about the building of the canal. The museam is open from the end of April to the middle of May. The hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday, a 1 to 5 Sunday. Admission is $2.50.

The nationalgallery is a must. As Canada’s premier art gallery, it has an enormous collection of North American and European works in various media, all housed in an impressive building in the centre of town, at 380 Sussex Drove. It’s just 15 minutes walk from the Parliament Buildings.
