This is a 98-room medieval-style castle-cum-mansion built between 1911 and 1914 by sir Henry Pellat, a very wealthy and evidently eccentric man. The mansion has been a tourist site since 1937, when the cost of upkeep became too much for its owner. The interior is sumptuous, built with the finest materials imported from around the world. Note especially the conservatory. Pellat even brought in stonemasons from Scotland to build the walls around the estate.

In summer, the 2.5 hectares of restored gardens behind the castle are worth a visit in themselves. This area is open to the public (without the need to buy a ticket to the castle) on the first Monday of each month and every Tuesday form 4 pm to dusk.

Obscurely situated with no walk-in traffic at all, this excellent textile museum Toronto is highly recommended for anyone with the slightest interest in textiles. It’s the only museum textile in the country to exclusively collect and display handmade textiles and tapestries from around the world. There are pieces from lain-America, Africa, Europe, South-East Asia and India.

The Tibetan collection is particularly fine, as is the one from Indonesia. In addition, there is changing show of contemporary textiles.

Tourist Attraction Art Gallery of Ontario

This is one of the top three art galleries in the country, the others being in Ottawa and Montreal. Though not the Louvre, it is excellent, and unless you have a lot of stamina, you’ll need more than one trip to see it all. The arts gallery at 317 Dundas St W, two blocks west of University Ave, houses works (mainly paintings) from the 14th century to the present.

There is also a Canadian section and rooms are changing exhibitions, which can sometimes be the highlight of a visit. The AGO is best known for its vast Henry Moore sculpture collection- one room holds about 20 of his major sculptures of the human form.
