It is housed in the attractive old Victorian building at 240 McLeod St on the corner of Metcalfe St, south of the downtown area. The four-storey building fostering an appreciating and understanding of nature includes a good section on the dinosaurs once found in Alberta.

Also excellent are the realistic mammal and bird dioramas depicting Canadian wildlife. Major temporary exhibitions on specific mammal, mineral or ecological subjects are a feature.

For those who like to look at money, you can see lots more of it at the Currency Museum (9613-782-8914) in the Bank of Canada to 245 Sparks St. in summer, its open Monday to Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. From September to May, it’s closed Monday. Various displays tell the story of money through the ages, fro whale’s teeth to collector’s banknotes. Admission is free.

Basilica of Notre Dame

Notre Dame Basilica built in 1839, this is one of the city’s most impressive house of worship. A pamphlet available at the door outlines the many features, including carvings, windows, the organ and the Gothic-style ceiling. It’s on Guigues Ave, across from the National Gallery, in the Byward Market area.
